Multi-Plate Clutch

Automobile : Multi-Plate Clutch

● It is modification of single plate clutch where increased the number of frictional plate (friction surface and clutch plate).

● Due to this friction surface increasing, the torque transmission capacity of clutch increased, the size is the remaining fixed. Alternatively the size of the clutch is reduced for same power transmission has the single plate clutch.

● This type of clutch is used in heavy transport vehicle by racing car where high torque transmitted.

● This clutch is also used in scooter and motor cycle as space available is limited.

● A systematic sketch of multi-plate clutch.

● It consists of flywheel, pressure plate, spigot end with clutch spring, thrust bearing and clutch pedal and two set of friction plate.

● One set of friction plate slides in Longitudinal groove of flywheel and other one slides on spines on the pressure plate hub.

● The friction plate are arrange alternatively to each set.

● When the clutch pedal is pressed, the axial pressure act on the pressure plate to move right and compressing the clutch spring at the spigot end.

● Thus pressure of friction plate release and it is disengaged.

● When clutch pedal released the clutch spring exert a pressure on the pressure plate to moves the pressure plate to left and thus clutch again engaged.

Advantage of Multi-Plate Clutch :

1. Increase the amount of torque to be transmitted.

2. Decrease the pedal effort to operate the clutch.

3. Decrease the weight of the clutch.

4. Decrease the M.O.I (Moment of Inertia) of the clutch.

5. Increase the better acceleration.

Disadvantages of Multi-Plate Clutch :

1. More number of friction plate.

2. Large amount of heat developed which may change the properties of friction lining.

3. Heavy

4. Too expensive.

Application of Multi-Plate Clutch :

1. Sport car,motorcycle

2 Heavy vehicle

3. Locomotives
